Windows 11 was launched in October 2021 and was greeted with mixed reviews in terms how much of an improvement it offered. Windows 10 had been an extremely popular Operating System and many users preferred to stick with what they were used to.
As Windows 11 has now been around for two and a half years, it may be worth considering an upgrade, if you haven’t already done so. Although Windows 10 still has much to offer, it doesn’t cost anything to upgrade to Windows 11.
What would be the benefits of upgrading?
- Windows 11 has now been in use for long enough for key updates and bug-fixes to have been rolled out.
- It integrates with Microsoft Teams, directly into the taskbar, making communication seamless.
- It brings a greater level of security through enhanced encryption.
- It has a fresh new Interface with centred taskbar icons, a new Start menu and widgets which provide at-a-glance information about weather, news and calendar events.
- It manages multiple screens with fewer glitches.
- It supports Android apps, giving you access to the largest app store (although not all apps can run on it).
- It has enhanced Artificial Intelligence functionality. Although Microsoft’s AI Assistant, Copilot, is technically available on Windows 10, the Windows 10 version has less functionality and is more of a chatbot.
- Support for Windows 10 will cease in 18 months’ time, so by then you should have upgraded, otherwise you won’t receive security updates.
Are there any reasons not to upgrade?
- Windows 10 still runs well, and many users feel that Windows 11 isn’t as significant an upgrade as some previous versions were.
- Windows 11 has stricter hardware requirements compared to Windows 10. It requires a compatible 64-bit processor, 4 GB of RAM, and UEFI firmware with Secure Boot. If your PC doesn’t meet these requirements, upgrading might not be feasible.
- You should check whether the software that you use in your business is compatible with Windows 11 before upgrading. Some older applications may not work seamlessly.
